I got tired of seeing the same narratives over and over again in mainstream entertainment. They weren't a reflection of my world, nor that of many of those around me. I wanted to tell and share stories that haven’t previously been told or seen in film - and to give actors who are so rarely given the chance to play compelling roles - the space and platform to develop their talent. I also saw it as a brilliant opportunity to share aspects of our multi-faceted Bahamian culture that have not been previously explored in film for international audiences. Hence, Storypelago Films.
The name "Storypelago" comes from our view that all stories are separate entities connected through the lessons that they teach and thus form a larger narrative; much like how islands make up an archipelago. It’s the personal myth and drive of the characters whose lives we create and bring to the screen that drives the choices we make when selecting the films we want to develop. At Storypelago Films, we believe that all stories born of authenticity have an innate power to move and change people and communities to greater strength and understanding.
So Many Stories To Tell
Born in Nassau, Bahamas, Marlena Leonard spent her childhood in the capital and her teen years in Freeport, Grand Bahama.
An avid reader from an early age, Marlena quickly took to writing her own stories, from talking cats, to grand mythical adventures only a nine-year-old could imagine. This natural obsession with stories and characters soon developed into a love for the stage, donning new personas at every opportunity.
She is currently in her final year at Regent's University London in their Screenwriting and Film Production BA(Hons) program, and is the recipient of a competitive international scholarship for screenwriting and production students.
